It's hard to know for sure what we are looking at here...but Hudswell Clarke 640, the next loco built after this one (No.639) is also an 0-4-2ST arrangement. Look at the frames in the background - with a gap where the cylinders go, then two sets of horn blocks and a cut out for a single trailing wheel. Looks convincing and, in the foreground a two cylinder block with inside valves, just like sister HC 640. If that's not enough to convince you, look at the shape of the green stored saddle tank at the top of the heap - the same shape as HG 640's tank.

So we think that Robin R Beck's photo includes much of HC639. We hope you agree!

Another look at the stored frames. We are looking at them from the front end, with that opening where the cylinders will fit, then the horn blocks for the axle boxes - two axles - and then the semi-circular cut out to give clearance for movement of the trailing axle - clearly a 0-4-2 chassis.

The stored frames seen from the opposite direction. We are looking at them from the back end. The saddle tank on top of the boiler (Far too big for a little 0-4-2 chassis) must be for this loco. You can just see the left hand cylinder and it's easy to imagine the cylinder block slotting into the front of the frame in this locomotive jig saw puzzle.

The trouble is that they've mixed up the pieces from at least TWO puzzles!
