A long time ago, #153 was hauling a passenger train through the Key West area when suddenly a hurricane struck the keys. Number 153 raced across trestles and thundered down the track to beat the oncoming storm only minutes behind her last car! But a few minutes later the storm hit, and passed through. A rescue effort was put in place to find #153 and its train. After about a week of searching, they found the train. Only a few cars were derailed towards the back end of the train! The locomotive and most of the cars stayed intact! However, the track underneath, a little to the north, and through the Key West area south of the train, was ripped up and trestles between the Key West Islands were almost completly destroyed. Therefore, FEC #153 is a very unique locomotive that I think is pretty lucky to have survived that hurricane!!!

A cosmetic restoration of this locomotive has been completed, and it is on display inside the main exhibit building.
