#1223 was built in October of 1941 for the Pere Marquette, part of the order for N-1 2-8-4 Berkshires. She served the PM and later the C&O until her retirement in 1951. She was donated to the Michigan State Fairgrounds after being repainted into C&O. In 1980, the Fairgrounds no longer wanted 1223 and was accepting bids on the engine. The city of Grand Haven won and the move to Grand Haven was used as a training exercise for the Michigan National Guard. She currently resides near the Grand River with a PM Boxcar, a PM Caboose and a GTW caboose, along with a wig-wag and a coal tower, at the former GTW yard in Grand Haven.
