The company was The Southern RAILWAY! Not all US companies took the title "Railroad" and the Southern was one that did not. Take a look at their herald. Please check your facts before adding comments.

630 is said to be operational this fall and will be leased by Norfolk Southern along with 4501 and 610. Hopefully 611 and 1218 will join the steam program soon. :)

630 is going through the most extensive rebuild TVRM has ever taken on. From a new section of the first boiler course, tube sheet, and smoke box. Not to mention all 150+ studs in the boiler were replaced. Every pedestal surface was machined and every spring and brake rigging hole was re-bored and bushed. Valve and piston Cylinders have been bored true. All wheels have new tires, journals turned, and crank pins quartered. New cast driving boxes are being machined, and the lead truck was converted to roller bearing. Currently the fabrications of 2 new delivery pipes are in the process along with aligning crosshead guides. Hopefully in another year we can have the engine sitting back on its wheels, and MAYBE ready to steam in another 2 years. Currently there are only a few people working on her during the week, so the best effort is being made with what we got. If more people would like to become members of TVRM and get involved, maybe we can get her running sooner. We have done a lot, but still have a ways to go.

We are now moving into the summer of 2008 shortly. The engine was going to be done several years ago. Stopping in the shop recently, I was told there was quite a bit of work to be done. The staff member also told me that very little work was being done on it at all. With all of the trips that are scheduled on so many lines...it must be hard to keep everything rolling. The 630 will be done when the 610 is ready to fall apart.

I have heard from Tvrm employees & volunteers that they hope to be finished with the restorationby November, although it will probably be 2006 before it operates in revenue service. By the way,the 630 is large enough to pull the Dixieland Excursions unassited to Summerville, GA and return (due to the recently installed turntable that was moved to Summerville from Alabama near Birmingham.), which will be a great improvement to the experience of the trip.

The 630 is curreently undergoing an EXTENSIVE rebuild. The boiler has received a NEW smokebox course and front flue sheet, plus serious firebox repair.  The frame is bent somewhat lile a pretzel from 100 years of abuse, and has necessitated MUCH work to find a true centerline, which the pedestals and clyinders will be trued to.  New spring rigging is being designed with individual lengths for EACH piece to compensate for the frame bends and humps, so when done, she'll sit level with proper weight distribution on each wheel. Stuck furnace bearers were freed, trued, re-faced with a synthetic liner.  Frames and braces were full of cracks and bad repairs, so these were cleaned out good metal and welded.  And thers's still a long way to go!  Come visit us!!      TVRM           RJK
