8053 has been out of service for a period of time. Now the mine only have one steam locomotive running, the last one seems to be JS 8089.

Now one of the last few JS Class 2-8-2 locomotives left in service in China today, JS 8053 now only has a few weeks of service left as it has been reported that real working steam at the Coal Mine at Sandaoling in Xinjiang Northwest China, one of the last strong holds of real working steam in China, is to end of steam operations on 15th January 2024? As new HXn5b Diesel locomotives have been delivered and crews are undergoing final training on them, marking the end of steam at Sandaoling Coal Mine soon. To any railfan wanting to see this last strong hold of real working steam left in the world today, my advice is go now while you can before its too late.

JS 8053 is among the very last few JS Class 2-8-2 locomotives left still operational at Sandaoling and still at work in China today. The JS Class 2-8-2, which JS in Chinese means "Construction" or "Development" where China’s standard mix traffic locomotives and were built from 1957 up to 1988. They came in two batchs with the first members of the class being built from 1957 to 1965 at Dalian and Qishuyan locomotive works, the second batch were all built at Datong works from 1981 right to 1988 as the last mainline steam locomotives for use on China Rail, and could be seen hauling both freight and passenger trains on secondry and branch lines, as well as shunting in hump back marshalling yards across China. Over 1,916 were built, but today as of 2023 there are only 13 members of the JS Class still at work in China today and all of them at Sandaoling in Xinjiang, China, which 8053 is one of them.
