Discovered completely buried in sand near the mouth of the Whanganui River when coastal defence work was in process, this early New Zealand built loco was abandoned as long ago as 1918. Having finished work on the south mole of Whanganui harbour, she was left in a shed near the coast. In September 2025 she was discovered and, with support from the contractors, local authorities and other parties, was excavated and moved to the premises of Steamrail Wanganui.

E. W. Mills built three locos of this design, known as the Class A for the Foxton & Palmerston North Tramway. Whilst sister loco Opossum survives and is displayed as built as a 0-4-0 tank loco, albeit modified in many ways, Skunk was rebuilt as a geared, chain drive loco. The third loco, Wallaby was scrapped at the end of the 19th century.
